Kihnu Island in the Baltic

Kihnu lies 12 km (7 mi) off the coast of Estonia and is the largest of more than a dozen islands in the reefs and shallows of the Gulf of Riga. It is 16 sq km (6 sq mi) in area with a low ridge running down the middle and only 9 m (30 ft) above sea level at its highest point.

The island farmsteads are enclosed by forest, which prevents soil erosion as well as protecting the islanders from the bitter northeast winds.

Huge broadleaf trees stand like sentinels in the coastal meadowlands that lead to a 36 km (22 mi) long shoreline of dunes and shifting sands where the scent of juniper is everywhere in the air. The island is a nesting place for hundreds of bird species and the coastal reef is home to the last grey seal colony in the Baltic.

The first historical documents relating to Kihnu date from the late 14th century but excavations show that the island was inhabited, at least during the summer months, from around 1500 BC.

It has at various times been under Danish, Swedish, Estonian, Polish and Russian rule, reflecting the turbulent history of the Baltic.

Since time immemorial the men here have been seafarers and fishermen, skilled at woodwork and shipbuilding, while the women are wholly responsible for working the land and keeping alive the rich island culture of music, dance and poetry.

A trip to Kihnu transports you back in time into a fascinating folk culture. The inhabitants speak their own language and wear traditional homespun costume. Each woman makes her familys clothes with intricately knitted, woven and embroidered patterns symbolising ancient legends.

The islanders are symbiotically bound up with their harsh environment, their survival entirely dependent upon cultural loyalty and community sharing. Against all odds, they have managed to hang onto their heritage at the same time as welcoming strangers to their shores.

Underground Espionage Syndicate Shut Down

Underground hacking groups do exist that are paid to steal your personal data. These groups can target anyone. The high profile case of Michael Haephrati gave us a look into this secret hackers world.

Mr. Haephrati, a computer programmer, created a Trojan to spy on his former in-laws. His wife saw the money in selling this capability to other people.

Haephratis subscribers could target any individual or business they wanted to steal intellectual property from. The data stolen was secret correspondence, economic data, and documents.

This is the creepy story of how they did it.

Haephrati subscribers would pick a target they wanted to steal information from. Haephrati would then deliver a psychological hook to that individual. The target received an email from a person that looked like a known associate. The psychological hook was usually of a business opportunity. When the target responded to the email, they would receive a Trojan. If the target did not respond to the original email, they would receive a CD by postal mail with the psychological hook and a hidden Trojan.

The Trojan was part key-logger, part remote access exploit, and part copy and send FTP software. The key-logger portion would record keystrokes. The remote access exploit allowed anyone to watch what a person was doing on their computer in real time. The FTP portion of the Trojan would scan, copy, and send files to more than a dozen servers located around the world.

According to police records, the data stolen included secret marketing plans, data on new products in the making, and even confidential employee data. Police estimate that some 13 gigs of data was stolen from people before they were able to shut it down.

People who subscribed to Haephrati gained economic advantage of competitors.

A subscription to Haephratis didn’t come cheap. Haephratis charged a business customer $3,500 (U.S. dollars) to create a customized software program and to make the initial install on the victim’s computer. The monthly fee was then $900 to maintain the infrastructure used to collect, store, and forward the secretly acquired data on a monthly basis.

The cost to victims of Haephrati’s were huge. They lost their best marketing plans, new secret products in the pipe-line they were working on, and even lost the trust of their employees’ because of stolen employees’ personal data. All of this theft was facilitated by what are known as underground servers. The following price list was found on underground servers in 2007.

Phishing Web site hosting”per site $4 - $6 Yahoo Mail cookie exploit”advertised to facilitate full access when successful $4 U.S.-based credit card with card verification value $2 - $7 An identity (including U.S. bank account, credit card, date of birth, and government-issued identification number) $15 - $19 List of 28,000 e-mails $6 UK-based credit card with card verification value $3 - $13 Skype accounts $13 Online banking account with a $9,500 balance $400 Valid Yahoo and Hotmail e-mail cookies $4 Compromised computers $7 - $21 World of Warcraft accounts”one month duration $11 Verified PayPal account with balance (balance varies) $11 - $60 Unverified PayPal account with balance (balance varies) $13

Haephrati may have never been caught if it wasn’t for his own stupidity. He continued to harass his former in-laws by taking his former father-in-law’s private work and posting it publicly on the Internet to defame his person and character. His former father-in-law went to the police in November of 2004.

The police were able to trace the Trojan back to Haephrati’s business by using their own anti-hacker computer forensic tools.

In 2005, Michael Haephrati and his wife were arrested by British police in London and extradited to Israeli where they were found guilty of economic and industrial espionage.

Rumor has it that a secret deal was reached between Haephrati and the Israel Intelligence Agency and they were set free. The deal involves Haephrati now using his Trojan software for law enforcement agencies.

Spyware Blocker For Safer Surfing

Spyware is taking over the computer networks all over the world. It is said that ten minutes into connecting your PC to the internet it will be infected with adware and spyware. A good spyware blocker is the only way to keep your PC safe from harm.

Does your PC suffer from lack of speed? There are many reasons your PC will be running slowly. Inadequate maintenance is one of them. Most of the time however, spyware and adware are the main culprits of a slow running PC.

There are two main types of spyware. Most of them will come into your pc by way of being downloaded. This means that you have downloaded something that has the spyware attached. This could be an email, free software or anything else you download from the internet. The first kind of spyware will go through and get information from your cookies folder.

The internet cookies folder is where all of your internet habits are stored. Information stored here will divulge where you have surfed and what you have done online. The time you have been there is also recorded here, and maybe even the password and username you use to log in to some websites. The other type of spyware is more cunning. The second type will get downloaded in the same way as the first.

The other type of spyware will not only look through your cookies folder. This type will spy on you in real time. This means that it will see everything you are doing and when you are doing it. It records every key pressed on your keyboard and where that key was pressed. It will then make use of your email account to relay the information back to the person who sent it to you.

Using a Spyware Blocker to Get Rid of Spyware

A Spyware Blocker is the only way you will be able to get rid of spyware. Most of the time antivirus software will not pick it up, because it is not classified as a virus. If you find good software, it will be able to get rid of the spyware on your PC and keep out potential new infections.

Always be Safe

No one wants their personal info ending up all over the internet. Keep your information safe by using a spyware blocker that is capable of taking care of business. To learn more about such a program take a look at noadware. Net.

Packaging Materials

If you have ever moved house, needed a storing solution or have had the need to ship goods from place to place, then you will have had a need for suitable packaging. Cardboard boxes have two basic material constructions, single wall and double wall.

Single wall boxes are built up of one layer of cardboard and one layer of fluting. They are perfect for transporting goods, particularly when the weight of the objects isn’t too great.

Double wall boxes consist of one cardboard layer, then a layer of fluting, followed by another cardboard layer, another fluting layer, and another cardboard layer. They are ideal for transporting, storing or posting heavier items.

Double walled boxes cost more than single walled to start with, but they last much longer as they can support far more weight and are therefore more durable.

When packing light items, they can be placed in a suitable box and then supported using Loosefill otherwise known on the street as Watsits (except they are white and dont taste as good!) Loosefill will protect light items from damage in transit, but if the items that you are transporting have much weight to them, you will want to wrap them in bubble wrap.

Bubble wrap is cheap to buy and therefore cost effective to use as padding to prevent your items getting damaged. It provides an excellent source of padding and prevents damage not only to your item, but so any surrounding items as well.

Depending on the goods you intend to package, you might prefer to use corrugated paper to keep items separate and thus protected. Sometimes called wavy paper or protection paper, corrugated paper is another cost effective way to protect items in packing boxes. Corrugated paper comes in 75 metre rolls in a variety of widths to suit any requirements.

The important thing to remember is that no matter what you are planning to transport, there is a suitable packaging medium to do the job for you. Correctly used, your goods will arrive at their destination in one piece without any problems. All that is required is to make sure that you use packaging materials suitable for your application.

For expert advice about what packaging materials you will require, please visit Aspak.co.uk for pallet boxes and a complete range of packaging materials.

Using a Flash Indoors

Over the years, you’ve probably seen plenty of indoor flash pictures that have a pitch black background and a washed-out, overexposed foreground. Many factors conspire to produce these stark, unflattering shots, but one of the major contributors is, once again, your camera thinking on its own. You’re letting it decide when to turn on the flash and which shutter speed to use.

First of all, you don’t always need the flash. Indoor photography offers many opportunities for stunning existing-light portraits and moody interior shots. And when you do have to turn on the flash, you can make certain adjustments to preserve the ambiance of the room so that your background doesn’t fall into a black hole.

Flash shots may have a pitch-black background for a couple of reasons. The first problem is that the light from a typical digital camera’s flash reaches only about 2 to 3 metres. Anything beyond this range, and you’ve got yourself an inadvertent ambient-light photo.

If your camera has a manual mode that allows you to dictate both the aperture (f stop) and shutter speed, you can easily overcome these problems.

Once in manual mode, try this combination as a starting point for flash photography indoors:

• Set your film speed to 100
• Set the aperture (f-stop) to f-5.6.
• Set the shutter speed to 1/15th of a second.
• Use the forced-flash mode. (Don’t use the red-eye reduction feature)

When you use these settings, hold the camera as steady as possible or better yet, use a tripod. At these slow shutter speeds, your shots are more vulnerable to camera shake, and therefore to blurriness. Your flash will help freeze everything in its range, but the background, not illuminated by the flash, may blur if the camera isn’t steady.

If your camera doesn’t have a manual mode, all is not lost. Almost every consumer model has a night time or stow-synchro mode (look for a “stars over a mountain” icon). The intention of this mode is to let you shoot portraits at twilight. But you can also use Nighttime mode indoors to open up the background. Granted, you don’t have as much control with this setting as you do with manual mode, but you may be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Staying In Sac

The Golden State is shot-through with big cities. From San Francisco to Los Angeles to Newport Beach and back up the coast again, there are no shortages of big cities to choose from. To be sure, smaller college towns like Berkeley, Davis, and Irvine also get folded into the Golden State batter. With all of these options, what makes Sacramento the capitol?

Christened by the stalwart Gabriel Moraga, Sacramento was little more than a trading post when John Sutter arrived in 1839 from Switzerland. Within ten years he and his heirs would guide the transformation of the trading post into a military barracks for the U.S. Army and eventually into an incorporated city. Sacramento is the oldest incorporated city in the state, having been invested in 1850. This does not mean it is the oldest, however, as that distinction belongs to Monterey.

With the defeat of the Mexican army in 1848, the capital of California was moved from Monterey. The first city to be designated the new capitol was San Jose. When the state legislature met there in 1850, it was argued the capitol should be moved further inland to avoid retribution either from Mexico or the Spanish Empire.

Two years earlier, James Marshall famously discovered gold in the American River in Coloma, about 50 miles away from Sacramento. In the years that followed, Sacramento became the inheritor of the California Gold Rush. The city flooded with new residents and economic prosperity. As evidence of Sacramentos growing importance, the Transcontinental Railroad terminated in the city, solidifying it stature as the gateway city to California.

With brief stints in Vallejo and Benicia, the capitol was moved, finally, to Sacramento in 1854. Taking advantage of the citys tremendous infrastructure and rail access, the Constitutional Convention named Sacramento the permanent capitol of California in 1879. Inspired by the nations capitol, the California State Capitol was not actually completed until 1874, where it stands to this day in tribute to the vision and foresight of John Sutter.
