The Travel Agent Is Your Friend
Ask anyone about their experiences or perceptions with a travel agent, and they’ll tell you that you should probably move on elsewhere or just use one of the big players. Many people think that travel agents are expensive and don’t offer any value for that higher cost. And you really can’t blame them; the major travel brands, from airlines to rental car companies, have spent a lot of marketing dollars to help reinforce that opinion that you’ll get a better deal when you buy direct with them. But marketplaces have a middleman for good reason, and the tourism industry is no different, as there is a time and place for a travel agent.
While much has changed in tourism, some things haven’t, and those cumbersome and quirky systems that the airlines, hotels, and car rental agencies used are still the same. There is a myriad of rules and features and only a travel agent can help you take advantage of the best options for you. Sure, airline websites have some great fares but that’s only one picture of the pie. After all, wouldn’t you rather pay an extra $15 for your airfare rather than spend the night in an airport and arrive the next day instead? Your choice. Travel agents are also on lists to have first access to special offers and deals that are difficult find elsewhere.
You might find it hard to find the right travel agent for you. But if you think in terms of your needs, that might help: for example, are you looking for a planning for an event in your life, such as a destination wedding? Maybe you need to sit down and talk with someone face to face, and in that case you can just look in the Yellow Pages for someone local. Many popular travel websites also offer travel planning services. The thing is, beyond agent certifications or qualifications, is that you feel they will understand your needs and wants.
When you should use a travel agent? Oh the classic question. If you could consider your travel a “once in a lifetime” event, then that’s probably a good case for a travel agent. Also if it involves a large party, any more than 4 people, that’s also a good candidate. Remember, an agent isn’t there just to deal with some travel reservations and booking a car rental for you. They can ensure you have the right visa paperwork, advise if travel insurance is truly necessary, and be there for you in the event of problems or issues in transit. Isn’t it night to know you’ve got someone you can call, god forbid if there’s an emergency?
Have you booked your next holiday yet? If not - why not? Get your thinking cap on, especially now that you have the information you need to know whether you can book on your own or if you should speak to a travel agent.
