I reviewed the Cheeva Spa in Chiang Mai, Thailand on July 10, 2010. Chiang Mai has more than forty spas and The Cheeva has been around for some time however as of six months ago they relocated to a new location. Their new building is larger and more stylish than the previous one. It has a pleasant garden with additional buildings for treatments.

The reception was as expected with a pleasant smile and a desire to answer questions and meet my requests. I chose a one hour hot oil massage. They have a jojoba oil that they use for massage. I think jojoba is really the best massage oil though it’s also probably one of the most expensive. Chemically jojoba is actually an ester and consequently it will never become rancid. It also is very close in structure to our own sebum making an excellent skin and hair treatment.

The Cheeva begins its treatments with a floral milk foot bath. This is followed by a short salt scrub for the feet. I was then taken to one of the adjacent buildings with a large treatment room. There were two massage tables and a rather large bath tub. It seems all the decor and equipment is new.

The woman doing the massage was named Daeng, and she said she had been doing massage for six years. Her was massage was really good. Tempo and rhythm are important qualities in any good massage and hers was right on. Her pressure was also just right, occasionally getting close to my upper limits of comfort but never exceeding it.

Following the massage I was given some warm ginger tea while I basked in my pleasant state of relaxation.

The regular price for a one hour Hot Oil Massage is 900 THB or a little under $30 USD. At the time of this review, they are continuing to offer 20% off all treatments. Call first to confirm this in the future. I very much enjoyed my experience, it was a good massage at an excellent price.
